STUPID money paid for a Tickford top

I have a bone-stock, original 1994 90 with a Bestop fastback... it'd be a shame to put anything on it. But, alas, I have kids to cover. Does anyone out there have a really nice condition Tickford?? I'm serious.

Joshua -

Many thanks for the lead... how I missed that in my search is anyone's guess.

Locating contact info for NAS West is in order. That's exactly what I'm after!

Unless you're planning on keeping it in a museum, get a Badger. Stupid money for the sake of originality, especially something that will inevitably be trashed in a few years? Not sure I follow the logic.

So what would appropriately stupid money be for a NOS Tickford be? Brand new , never on a truck, with the paper still on the windows .

If you have a fast back doesn't that mean you have a belt rail and the tickford won't work?

The only fast backs I have seen have all been belt rail...

I think the fast back came out for the 1995..

Agreed.
I have never seen a fastback that wasn't a belt rail set up.
Not saying one doesn't exist, but haven't seen one yet.

For everyone's edification, as it appears that I've piqued everyone's interest... my favorite Land Rovers, of which there have been many, are those that are the most original. I restored a very low mile, '67 NADA 109" a few years ago that had one feature that I had only heard about (a plastic plug in the rear cross-member) and one detail that I've not seen in 20 years (the VIN etched into the front horns) - impossible to recreate original. I spent quite a bit of time and energy dismantling and properly painting the safari cage on my NAS 110 last year to return it to Alpine White, as I don't prefer the look of the black powdercoated cages - it just didn't look "right" to me. Sorry, no offense intended, Mike. The ones that drove me the most crazy were those filled with unnecessary holes (i.e. the factory work lights that everyone seemed to feel was necessary - involving the drilling of 4 holes in the aluminum hard top). Indeed, I took a job with Rovers North because they supplied, at least at the time, primarily GENUINE parts.

So, when this 29k mile '94 Defender came into my possession with no options whatsoever (except for the rear light cages and the '95 fast back), I set out to keep it original. But, I need a soft top and a rear seat for my kids. Which necessitates, in my book, a forward-facing seat - as opposed to non-original side-facing seats or the new, current Defender style fold-ups.

It also requires a soft top.

I chatted quite a bit with guys at RN about having Exmoor manufacture me a top that is close to original. This is because I want zip up windows (so I don't have to look for a place to store them), alpine windows (which were original to the '94s) and grey in color. Again, black just doesn't look right to me. Nor do the corner windows.

I then received a link to NAS West. But I can't locate contact info to save my life.

So, the idea came across my mind to recreate that top... an "improved" Tickford that looks just like the original, but incorporates a belt-rail system, which has been added to my 90 (I agree - the fastback was introduced for 1995 and is a Besttop product, which makes sense as they manufactured the belt rail soft top as well). Thus, my desire for the non-popular Tickford. Which I appear to have located, for less than the aftermarket, RN, black, zip-out windowed, non-original.

Now I need to convince my local upholsterer to try to eek out enough canvas material to incorporate the belt system. I suppose, if all else fails, I can remove the belt rail since the snaps are all still there - I just don't want the rivet holes showing. Once again proving, you can't recreate original!

Oh. There's also the silly fact that I miss the '94 Arles blue 90 - with Tickford - that was bought new (the first day they were available in the NAS market). All the other ones at the dealership had only the tonneau. For that matter, I miss the Arles blue '95 SW 90 that replaced it. But that's for another thread...

Frank,
We gave RN a bunch of 90 forward facing jump seats (with all brackets). They still have some of them and are right up the road. Just FYI.

Thanks, Mike.

I'm trying to get over there to pick one up.

The next call will be to get on your books to modify it into a high-back. I'm not completely averse to modifying original - I'd much rather my kids be less vulnerable to whiplash if we do get rearended. You're design, at least from what I saw on your facebook page, is the bees knees.

Thanks
