Still looking for Defender 90 for the hubby

Hi everyone,

I'm still searching for a Defender 90 for my husband for the holidays. I've learned that he would like a soft top...since we were teenagers, he has wanted Arles Blue, but I am having a lot of trouble tracking one of those down.

If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it. Everyone has been very helpful and it's been great.

It's better if the truck is restored/refurbished as I'd like to be ready to go when he gets it...

Thank you!!!

You are looking for the hardest color to find in a ST. someone already mentioned they only made those in 94'. It can also take a very long time to find the Defender that is just right. Most of us spend quite a bit of time searching. Restored ones can get really expensive. ECR is offering a 95 ST that will be restored and you can pick the color. I almost bought the yellow 95 ST they had a year ago that had been partially restored and it was 55K. They have a pic of it on their website to give you an idea. That being said what was wrong with the 94 Stephen has?

Christina, I've been in touch with David and found that the 90 is still in San Diego, where he was stationed last. I have records of the work I performed when I last saw the car 4 years ago, and will get that to you tomorrow when I can pop into the shop. But heed the suggestions to take your time and not jump into the first car that meets your immediate needs! The potential for overpaying for and underqualified car is high!

Thank you!

I was in touch with Stephen earlier this week about the Arles blue truck...we went back and forth a bit and I was waiting to hear from him. When the truck said 'pending', I was hoping it was for me. Then I saw sold today. So I guess not. I've yet to hear from Stephen.

I definitely don't want to rush. I've been reading lots and lots about the car and have read tons of threads on this site about soft tops.

BHTaco is selling a ST that looks great to me. I wanted to get an inspection done and he recommended Will Tillery (aka The Rover Guy). Is anyone familiar with him?

Would anyone mind taking a look at the truck and let me know thoughts?

Much appreciated!

And Roverlab--looking forward to hearing from you

Yes -- Will Tillery is very respected in the Rover community, you can fully trust his judgement.

I had not seen that one. Looks like a hard top? I just an email to the seller.

Did anyone have a chance to look at bhtaco's truck? It's the second or third in the classifieds. Do I need to be concerned that there is over 100,000 miles on it? It seems like it was fully restored.

Thank you!

That is a removable fiberglass hard top on a ST truck. Make sure to ask if they have a soft top to go with it. If its a badger brand, thats even better.

That is a soft top 90 with the fiberglass hard top. You just remove the hardtop install the soft top.

37k seems WAY overpriced for that one

Mileage on the truck is no such a big deal if of was maintained properly

We all posted and answered the fiberglass top question at the same time.

Good luck with your search.

Continuing my Defender education...feel like I'm getting another degree

My questions are...

Can a station wagon also be soft top, or are they mutually exclusive?

Can the seats that face each other be installed in a soft top? It is difficult/expensive?

Is it unrealistic to expect to be able to use a ST in a New England winter?

Maybe the best bet would be a convertible ST?

Thanks guys!!

Well at least you are starting at the right college

My questions are...

Can a station wagon also be soft top, or are they mutually exclusive?

Mutually exclusive - SW tops are not easily removable and where not meant to be removed and then re-installed numerous times..

Soft Tops give you the most versatility in top selection as you can get a 6 piece fiberglass hardtop for the 95s and 97s or a variety of bikini, surrey, half cab, full soft tops for the truck.
You can fit a fiberglass hard top on a 94 but there may be some trimming around the supports for the B pillar.

Can the seats that face each other be installed in a soft top? It is difficult/expensive?

Yes they can be installed on a soft top. The option with the ST was a bench seat that folds forward or is removable.

BIG QUESTION - What about kids? Do you have them? Are you planning to have them? How many?
I am not looking for an answer but these are questions you need to ask if you intend to keep the truck.
I would not put a child in a side facing seat.
You can get 2 kids in the forward facing bench seat and it has a 3 point harness for either a car seat or a booster.
The bench seat is not very comfortable for 2 full size adults and make sure they like each other before placing them back there. or if you hate your inlaws get the bench and drive them through some rooty trails as it will be sure to give their old kidneys and butts a fun ride .

You can also get Exmor Trim Lock and Folds which are forward facing bucket style seats that fold onto the wheel well and are safety tested.

Is it unrealistic to expect to be able to use a ST in a New England winter? Can't comment on this one but I think if you have a Badger 2 which seals nice and tight it would not be a problem. You can always installed seat heaters in your seats (really pretty easy) and keeps you toasty.

Maybe the best bet would be a convertible ST?
The best would be to get a ST, then add a SW to your budding fleet, followed by a 110 and a 110 double cab and, and and O...sorry I was projected my want list in this post.

Thanks guys!!
A word of advice - Try to get the truck you want that has at least most of the accessories your husband wants on it if possible. You never get your money back out of upgrades and each time you want to add an upgrade - such as a lift, bumper, locking differentials, the truck will be out of commission. So spend the extra $$ if it has everything or most everything he wants.

So Christina I'm curious. How many marriage proposals have you received from D-90 members?

I was in a gun shop one day when a woman came into buy a shotgun for her husband. Two shoppers proposed on the spot.

You might want to look for a 94 port-of-entry aluminum hard top d-90 that also comes with the soft top roll cage. Or buy 2 defenders. Not sure if there were any Arles Blue PoE's.

As you continue to educate yourself - this is worth reading.

http://www.eastcoastrover.com/INFOD90.html

And don't be afraid of high mileage - I bought mine with 155k. When first looking I was wanting to get one with half that much but those weren't in any better condition than what I bought (in some cases worse). It depends on previous owner(s) and how they maintained it. With that said, I put aside a budget to fix the cosmetic stuff that had wear and tear (figured that I saved on the purchase price and got a more new look/feel than buying a lower mileage truck when all said and done).

Good luck.
