I don't own one for two reasons.
They make your vehicle way more top heavy
They add a lot to the height of an already taller than normal vehicle

If you add 300 pounds 5 feet (1500 Ft/Lbs of extra side loading in turns) above your current center of gravity your vehicle becomes a whole other animal while cornering and on a windy highway.

Think how many parking lots, tree limbs, etc your rig just cleared. A RTT isn't going to help.

They are cool looking but if hyenas are not a threat they don't make sense to me. Just my .02.

have you ever owned one

beats the ship out of setting up a tent.
Has a nice cushy mattress
Screw the hyenas I am more worried about the crazy squirrels, racons and any other little think that only nylon is protecting you...o did I mention bears since they often maul sleeping tenters
Top heavy - never noticed it whatsoever - owned a Mombasa and currently the mack daddy of weight..one with a second room.
Besides it is fun sleeping 7 feet off the ground
IMHO.

Give me a roof top anytime! keeping the critters out and although it's a low chance...that late night, early morning storm that always happens can turn your ground tent into a mess! The extra weight on top isn't noticable unless you're running skinnies. Cornering has never been a concern as the D90 drives so slow, corners are like straight aways!. The only thing that would bother me with the (slightly) higher profile is high wind.

I have a 6" memory foam mattress in my tent...it's better than the Garden Inn!...lol.

Ron aren't you kind of old to be climbing up into a rtt ? I mean those late night bladder breaks must be brutal....

I have and always will have an RTT. Eezi Awn 1400 T-top with annex room. Going to add an Oztent RV5 to finish the family camping setup.

My 110 is my daily driver. With the 3" RTE progressive spring setup, I always need a 9' clearance for any parking or access. Aside from my own garage, almost every place you go will have 9' clearance. All malls and most drive thru's.

The RTE suspension is awesome on handling. Only slight variation in driving required to run at full speed. And mine is my DD.

I would NOT recommend an RTT for rock crawlers though. I'm overland configured, know my limitations and choose my trails appropriately.

You do get some wind resistance on the highway on windy days. I normally cruise at 70 mph though, regardless.

Tent price is steep but not crazy unless you are after the carbon-fiber version.

Divide cost of tent by average cost of hotel rooms and that is the number of nights you need to spend in the RTT to level out the price. I love the Maggiolina for our crappy weather for all the reasons pointed out. Hard top is rain proof and insulated for noise and cold, 1 minute setup and 2 minute take down, minimal handling impact on the truck, flat, dry, comfortable padding, pillows and bedding stay in place. The only real negative I have seen is the height and that can be said of anything that goes on top of an already tall vehicle.

I am biased to the Maggiolina - but this is after a ton of research that led to us carrying the line. Shipping discounts avail to forum members if you want to email me directly.

I really enjoy my Maggiolina - quick set up and take down and very comfortable. I can tell the difference when its on or off the truck but there's not much. I'm adding stiffer factory springs to compensate for the equipment I've added to the Land Rover. I've gone off roading at Uwharrie with the tent installed with no issues.

I love mine.

They only weight 50 lbs, 65 lbs with the Thule roof bars.

I will never camp on the floor again.

Shit... I have one for each Series truck now.

Keep in mind the one drawback to a Maggiolina is it consumes the entire roof rack. They wouldn't work for me at all, especially now that I made the mistake of letting the kids take the dogs camping.

I have a small pup tent that the spouse has become accustom too. We cannot down size.. It's not a roof top but serves our needs.
