Relatively recent rebuilt 3.9 or 4.0

I just learned that my mechanic cannot find anyone who rebuilds LR 3.9's. Engine is still running but a bearing or wrist pin is starting to make noise. A new 4.0 short block is $3200 I am told. Guess I should try for a 4.0 because of the availability of parts is greater.

Yes, buy a 4.6 short block or go cheap and just get a used motor and swap it in.

Also, run the motor until it siezes. I sort of doubt you have a true bearing or wrist pin failure.

Will the 4.6 work with the existing ECU?
Mechanic says it's definitely in the bottom end, what else could be making that ticking noise. The noise only starts when it reaches normal operating temp.

Now I feel snake bit with the 3.9. I can't see going that route unless it's new. I'm tempted but it just doesn't seem like the smart thing to do. I'm starting to see that the 3.9 is a dinosaur.

Just use a 4.2 chip out of a 93-95 RRC LWB. ~$100. It will work fine with the stock ECU though.

if you think the 3.9 is bad, wait til you get a 4.0. As stated above, do a 3.9 or 4.6- or better yet a 4.2 if you can find one.
