I am assuming you are asking either V8 or TDI. V8 version.

Why don't you have one built from the guts of a HP24?

And I think you might need to get an estimate from another shop.

Years ago when I thought I might need a rebuilt box the box alone was $1600 from Ericksen's in CT. You probably have a ZF approved rebuilder in your area.

Why not just get a used one? They are cheap and usually last quite well.

x2! A ZF transmission is one of the few used parts I wouldn't hesitate to install, which says a lot considering the amount of work to replace a transmission.

But I guess we need to keep in mind that clay is running a 5.3 through his.. Have a decent shop build an upgraded unit with an improved shift kit.. I looked I to this when I was toying with the idea of a supercharged or turbod performance engine.. My tranny shop said they can build it to take about 400 horses.. I wanna say they quoted me $2000... Carry out.

What I said before... a HP22-24 hybrid is as strong as it gets. Dave Ashcroft has posted details on Pirate about it.

This is the best advice in this thread. They are the premier builder of this transmission and have the best track record.

Is the 5.3 the problem or is it heat?

Guys thanks for the post and helping me mull over what direction to in. This is actually for the black build that I have up for sale. I did put a used tranny in it in the first place and not willing to go there again as I think I would have more on the line of having a "build from the ground up" and then having a tranny that is questionable or that I don't know how long it will last the new owner.

I did call Erikson and they have about a week turn around. Then I have to pay for shipping and install (or install myself...dread) so the shop quote currently is right in line with an Erikson purchase if I want to stay with an autobox.

I do have all the parts to go back to a stick and may go that route if I find a rebuilt R380. This might save money in the long run and would look more factory for the implied year of the truck - 94/95. Anyone care to comment if an auto would fetch more than a stick? Love to hear your thoughts.

On a side note my yellow truck is running the Gen III with a GM 4l60e and a BW T case so that truck is not the issue.

What a psychological slip to ask ZF or TDI and leave V8 out, because I am not fond of the V8...
My apologies!

Since the shop has it I am just going to bite the bullet and have them rebuild it. It will at least come with a warranty that is through a third party in case their is a problem. Thanks for all your feedback/help guys!
