I have been meaning to do this myself, but I think it would be trivial to make a bracket and use any light you want. I am not sure if something like this would mount to the tag mounts, but it's a nice light

https://www.expeditionexchange.com/kit/

What I want to find is a light with a retractable extension chord that can be used for both mounted use, or as a drop light when needed.

ya a retractable extention cord would be nice and convenient and useful..im looking to attach one to the portion above the rear license plate and then have it wired with my reverse lights as well as a seperate airplane style switch for manual use for example when someone rides my ass their guna be blind..hah...the one in the website looks as though it would be able to attach to the tag mounts but im not sure i was just hoping someone who had had the same proceedre i was planning to pop out and chime in..
thx

Better be careful about that - they may be assholes, but if you blind them you just might kill them, and that's, well .. not nice.

My idea is to mount the spring loaded roll of chord inside the vehicle (something like what comes with a drop light) and run it out through a small hole in the body above the tag, and into the light mounted the same place you want. I am sure neatly done with some sort of guide/fairlead or grommet it will look fine.

The light would need some kind of mount that was secure and wouldn't rattle, but could be easily detached when needed. Nothing has jumped out at me for a good fit yet though.
