Joe, just an FYI (and you may already know this but I didn't) the 3rd brake light bars came in 2 different sizes. And that said, I dont know what year it changed. But my stock 94 bar rusted out and when I picked up another bar from someone -and when comparing them figured out that it was slightly smaller (not as tall) but other wise fits fine. No big deal for me, but good to know. Maybe if someone had a large tire that fit snug to the larger light bar and got a smaller light bar as a replacement, it could be an issue. Anyways, it might not matter to you either way, but I just thought I would let you know. Rufus

Interesting. I have never seen that. I have noticed different bolts but never a different size bar. You sure it was genuine?

Wondering if I had a local fab shop knock these off from my blank, how many people would be interest? They would be black powder coated and what would be the price folks would pay for a copy? Not really interested in making money, more just helping forum members.

the replacement 3rd brake light bar I got was used but it was genuine complete with the original light, wiring, etc. i agree it was really strange to figure this out, but the original was taller than the replacement. I am reminded of this every time I see my ST rear window as the outline of the old bar is still chafed into the clear plastic.

mine too until I took the 3rd brake light off . The outlined is permanently embedded in the Tickford top. I wonder if the changed the design a little from 94 vs 95-97.

If you are making cpies how will you make the light or is this strictly for the metal part?

It would strickly be the metal part at this point. Since the top is a flat piece of metal, I suppose that someond could come up with a replacement light.

I have only done a little fiberglass work, but I am wondering if you could make a third brake light out of fiberglass? It would be stronger. The plastic on the stock lights get brittle over time and crack -they are just not going to last.

That is what one of mine suffered from. When I did my replacement of the third brake light bar, my bar was a rusted mess, but the light was ok. And my used replacement bar was in ok shape, but the light was cracked. Anyways, I used the best bar and best light parts and combined them. I stripped the bar of the nylon coating, filled any rust pock marks with a 3M filler and painted it with POR-15. The original light mounting bolts just rust in place and often have to be drilled out. So I had to retap the flat metal mount on the bar, used SS mounting bolts for the light, anti seize on those SS bolts and I was in good shape. Unfortunately I didnt salvage the second cracked light.. seeing as how the light is NLA...I am looking back and thinking I should have kept the light and repaired it.

With a Defender shoulda/woulda/coulda just kills me sometimes.........
