Parts for a full size safari rack, soft top

Well, the bad news is that I had to cancel the order from Symes Pasadena for my Full Size Safari Rack. After waiting for almost three months, neither the dealer nor LRNA could give me an ETA.

The good news is that I found a good used rack, ladder and crossbars locally. Does anyone here have the front support pieces? Specifically, I'm looking for part numbers:

LRNA90FSRR03 fitting kit
LRNA90FSRR04 each front support link
LRNA90FSRR05 each foot support
LRNA90FSRR06 nutplate kit

Thanks,

Javier

Javier,

What happened with Symes? Sorry to hear that the deal did not get done but glad you got most of the cage together.

Any information you can provide would be helpful for those of us in SoCal that need a rack.

Jeff,

Symes was excellent. They called LRNA several times a week inquiring about a ship date. They went above and beyond anything I expected from a Land Rover dealership (or perhaps I'm just used to Encino's shitty service). Frank at Symes called me once a week to follow up. He did all this with a very thin margin. Anyway, I guess I'm getting anxious, trying to make sure Joe P doesn't get a rack before me :P... kiddding... I just want something up there to haul my stuff.

What I will do is once the racks begin shipping, I will be again place an order with Symes and sell the one I'm picking up this weekend. It'll be freshly powdercoated and complete.

So... does anyone have the front supports for my rails. Ron, you have everything. It's probably in one of the 100 parts bins I imagine are in your home.

Javier, do you need the two hoops that go from side to side, or just the clamps that attach them to the rollcage? I have another two hoops, but that's it.

By the way, in the list of Safari rack part numbers, I think there is some duplication. As I recall, one of the part numbers is just two of one of the others. I always had trouble figuring out which was which, but the entire Safari rack consists of (in plain English):

(1) the basket,
(2) the rear ladder assembly,
(3) bolts and backing plates to mount the ladder,
(4) two front hoops (the tabs on the ends of these hoops tend to fatigue and should be gusseted),
(5) four clamps to attach the hoops to the roll cage (the way the two halves of each clamp attach together also tends to fail),
(6) eight bolts and washers to attach the hoops to the clamps,
(7) four spacers that go between the hoops and the basket--only on soft-tops
(8) six sets of nuts, bolts, and washers for attaching the basket to the hoops and ladder

Trevor,

I have the hoops, or crossbars, but considering that the rack was banged up pretty hard, I may be interested in yours. Keep me in mind for those.

As far as I can tell, I need everything but the basket, ladders and crossbars. One question that no dealership has been able to answer is: the part number for the crossbar-to-cage mounting brackets, does that include all four or do I need to order 4 at $128 each? I don't know which part numbers, if any, I need to order a quantity of 4 for front support.

Any info would be appreciated. I tried to order through EE, but I couln't even get prices, let alone quantities required or availability.

Javier, I don't remember the part-number specifics, except that once when I meant to order just one of some rack part, I ended up with more. You might try calling Mohammed at http://www.rovercity.com/ in FL, 800-274-4830. He's been very helpful in the past with deciphering LR parts descriptions.

Jeff, Joe and anyone else needing a rack:

Here's the latest in my ongoing quest for a safari roof rack. I picked up the used, damaged rack last night. All I have is the basket, two rails that hold the basket over the roll cage and bent rear ladder(s). I just ordered the foot support from LR Flat Iron in CO. Get this, they are in the middle of installing a rack on a soft top. I was puzzled, and asked him when they placed the order with LRNA to which he stated "earlier this month". I thought, WTF, I ordered and paid for mine in July!

Here's the Final score:

nla = no longer available
dpn = deleted part number
boi = back ordered indefinitely

stat p/n qty description
== ========== == ===================================
nla LRNA90FSRR 1 the complete rack with ladder, basket, rails, backing plates and all bolts
nla LRNA90FSRR01 1 the basket
nla LRNA90FSRR02 1 the ladder
nla LRNA90FSRR03 1 fitting kit, bolts, washers, etc (deleted p/n)
boi LRNA90FSRR04 1 each front support link
ava LRNA90FSRR05 4 each foot support
boi LRNA90FSRR06 1 longitudinal rails, contains two rails
boi LRNA90FSRR07 1 nut plate kit

This is based on emails and conversations with LRNA, Symes, LR Flat Iron in CO.

What does this all mean? It means the future doesn't look bright for those of looking for a rack. For those that have one to sell, call me first, please... :D

This can change if/when LRNA finds a vendor to make them, which I thought they had already done.

I ordered the feet (all four) from some dealer a while back - they were around 50 each.

George at RDS has a set of feet and crossbars, but obviously he's not fully operational at this time.

Javier,

That is news, but definitely not the good type. I really appreciate the heads up. I will do some extra looking and if I can help with info you are looking for while I am in my quest, I will certainly pass it along.

Many thanks for the update.

Thanks, Jeff,

This ongoing saga shows how persistent I am. I placed a call to the guy at roverconnection.com a few days ago. He asked me to give him some time while he researched what was available. Well, we called me back and said his sources stated that all parts are available except the basket and ladder. If you can get both used, then you may be in business. I cancelled my order through LR Flat Iron in CO. and placed an order through him. I'll let you know if/when I receive the stuff. Wish me luck!

Good luck!

Kind of frightening when "only" the basket and ladder are not available. That is like watching a football game where the special teams are available but the offense and defense are missing.

It seems odd to me that RoverConnection lists the entire genuine cage on their web site at $2,100 and does not mention that it is nla like they do for other parts.

Maybe I missed something. Why didn't you call Safety Devices directly? They have reorganized and are again supplying. They even have the NAS rack back on thier site with part numbers.

Dave, good point,

The first time I emailed Safety Devices via a form on their website, I received an automated response. I tried again on Wednesday 9/28. Here's my message and their Sales & Marketing manager's response which arrived today at 12:15am :

Hello,

I have an order for a NAS D90 full size safari rack with a local Land Rover dealership in the Los Angeles, CA area. I'd like to know if I can expect to receive the rack, or if there simply won't be any more made.

I am a huge fan of Land Rovers and consequently of Safety Devices racks and wish the company all the best.

Looking forward to your reply,

javier Velador

Their response (there is a light at the end of the tunnel):

Hi Javier

Thank you very much for your email and your interest in our products.

You may have heard that Safety Devices Ltd is restructuring and has now become Safety Devices International Ltd. The new company will continue to manufacture and market most of the roll-cage and roof rack product range of Safety Devices Ltd.

A vital part of the restructuring program is to improve the service and support we offer to you, our customer. Because our sales team is unable to effectively deal with the high volume of correspondence and queries, we aim to make better use of the experience of our dealer and distributor network. We therefore have decided to exclusively sell our products through our
dealers and distributors. The benefit for you is that you deal directly with a specialist who has detailed knowledge about fitting roll cages and/or roof racks to your particular vehicle.

The distributor listing on the website will currently being updated with the latest information and we would like to ask you to check for your nearest dealer and contact them direct. If you are unable to locate a suitable dealer in your area, please contact us again and assist you in directing you to a specialist.

The Safety Devices Int'l sales team.

PS: Production of roof racks will restart in the near future and most models will be available again. Please try us again in a few months. Also I am not sure if the old company ever received that order from your dealer. Have you got more details on that?

Update on my quest/rails for SALE

Jeff,

I agree, they should keep their site updated with NLA items identified as such.

So, here are a couple of updates for you guys that are still looking for safari racks. Kudos to the guy at Rover Connection (I can't remember his name) for pulling through on getting me these parts.

Today I received 'new' crossbars/rails (04) that look like they've been sitting in some warehouse, a little scratched, very dusty. Also, and these were key for me, were the front mounts for the crossbars(05) and the plates to which the ladder attaches to internally (07) . Sure, one can have them fabricated, but nothing really beats that factory OEM feel. The only thing I'm missing is 03, the fitting kit. But as I received installation instructions, I now know exactly what I need from Home Depot. Most bolts are either M10 or M8 of various lengths. Email me if you want more info.

Also, I noticed I now have three sets of crossbars. One set came with my used rack, the other two arrived today. Of those, one set is the rails for a safari roof rack(what I already have), the other is a set of rails complete with hardware.

These latter rails are brand new in the box and were made so you can attach Thule items or attachments for skis, bikes, canoes, surfboards and closed carriers. If someone is interested, they are *for sale* since I won't need them and they are superfluous once the rack is installed. Here's a link to what they look like:

http://www.roverconnection.com/Def%2...fbasicrack.htm

Last but certainly not least, I spoke to a vendor here in the LA area who mentioned they've contacted Safety Devices and were told that production will resume in November!! It's second hand information so take that into consideration. If it's true, you can start saving your money now. There will more than likely be a price increase, but amongst ourselves, I'm sure we can share which vendor has the best prices.

I'll post information as soon as I hear it.

Cheers!

Javier

Javier,

No doubt, and many thanks for the update. If you do not take pics I will probably just drive up north and have you help me put the rack on since you are the resident expert on the installation.

Cheers!

LOL, I'll post pics. But you're welcome to stop by just the same and I'll help you with the install.

I should have the ladder tomorrow back from the welder. He fixed the Target 'tweak' that was caused by the rack's previous owner's wife. Then it's off to Home Depot for metric bolts.

I have reached the Holy Grail of D90 ownership. In my mind and for the moment, at least

http://www.roverpalooza.com/images/T...HAVEN_007a.jpg

That's my red soft top with my 'new' OEM/Safety Devices roof rack. I installed it late Friday night for a trip this weekend. The left rear ladder barely shows signs of the repair. All hardware parts contained in the NAL part LRNA90FSRR03 can be sourced from any good hardware store. The only exception is four 1" spacers for four M10 bolts that attach the basket to front bars/rails (..RR04)

So for now, I'm good.

Thanks all for your ideas and feedback.

Javier
