Overdrive for Defender

Anyone have one that they are thinking of parting with? Such as a GKN or Global Roamer?

I have one sitting in the box awaiting install. Its a Global Roamerdrive from Ray Wood out west in Vancouver. Was going to install a Disco T-case (1:21) as I did in my 300Tdi years ago but decided to go for the OD in my 110 instead. I shall post a response or a new thread once I get it in. Still a tad too cold in the garage to gidderdun.

This one has been from Ushuaia to Alaska, when I saw it in CH it had returned from a quick jaunt through the boonies in Romania. Fitted to a Td5 130 SW, fully loaded. Never saw quite how it did on anything but flat plains but the whole vehicle was quick and cruised very well on the highway and normal roads.

Cons I could imagine it is adding complexity to the drivetrain, but I know both the owner and his mechanic and they had nothing but good things to say, and it was driven new from 1999 all over the world and back.

I have a roamer drive in my d130 . 300tdi variable vane turbo, ported head ,full intercooler ...R380 1.4 box
I honestly can say it not worth the effort . It will reduce cabin noise and revs but the motor does not have enough legs to sustain cruising speed on any kind of incline or sweeping road youll find yourself shifting to 4th alot . 4th od is almost exactly the same gear as 5th and 5th od is too dead to keep it in the power egts climb fast with it laboring in 5th od .

The Roamerdrive will give you a 28% reduction in RPM when engaged. Well worth adding if you do much highway driving. I see it as one of the best mods I have done so far.

Judging by responses here, so far only good results with Td5 models. Kind of agree I can't imagine my 200tdi having enough oomph to make the OD worth it.

Send Ray an email or call him at Global, you may well be correct thta the 28% decrease is too much for the venerable 200 Tdi. My 300 Tdi with the 15% of the Disco I t-case was great. My current 110 is a Td5 and has bags of pull. We'll see once I get the OD in it.

Good luck.

I would agree that the little extra power with the td5 will make it usable .

I always thought they would do better sales if the reduction was 15% instead of 28%. I considered one when all I had was a 1.6 TC. Then I found a 1.4.
