painting/coating galvy is possible, but yes it's definitely hard. There's an amount of time that you should ideally get it painted before. Prep is extremely important or it won't stick

Yeah I may give him a ring back and change that. Seemed like a good decision on impulse but, while I'm certainly no Peppard with the skinny pedal, it's bound to get scratched up.

Fresh galv is definately easier to paint but you can still prep older galv too. I would glass bead (or equivalent so the galv isn't removed). I galv'd and painted my old IIA bulkhead using a product called Galvprep then etching primer then paint without any blasting. It held up extremely well for over 12 years with no flaking of paint. Clean with PPG DX579 metal cleaner mixed 1:1 with fresh water. This sits for about 3 minutes then is fully rinsed with lots of fresh water and dry with compressed air (using an oil trap and inline filter or let air dry if it's hot and evaps reasonably quick). Follow this with PPG DX520 straight from the container allowing about 3 minutes to work it's magic. You'll see the metal go to a dingy dark streaked flat hue. Rinse with lots of fresh water and blow or air dry as before. Keep it dry until you can paint it but try to get this done with 24 hours. Galv will start to oxidize immediately if there is high humidity. I suggest wiping it down with MEK or equivalent just prior to painting if you have to wait a day or so for painting.

Leave it bright galv. Then you don't have to think about it.

Plus don't be surprised if Ups or fedex give it some marks on transport.
