You need to ask a few more questions.....

Do you want a Disco/RR or Defender box?

Do you want the LT77 or LT77S? They have different ratios. The LT77S that came with the 200TDI has better ratios for the engine, IMO.

Are you concerned over which suffix box you get? There are large strength differences from early to late. You really want and "F" or later if you want it to last behind the 200TDI.

Thanks for the input. I'm not in any way familiar to the 200tdi gear boxes. My project is a 1974 series III 109. I've got a brand new 200tdi that I purchased to swap in.
So I guess I'll need the defender version. And as new as I can find as far as strength of the different boxes.

I guess an r380 for a diesel defender would be good also.

Ashcroft "stumpy" R380 is about $1500 delivered to you.

If you are doing a series conversion you could use many things. There is a lot of custom work either way and you need to understand what you want to do. The best option would have been to get the box and transfer case that were with the engine. Is it a defender or disco 200tdi? This is probably not the best board to find a good diesel LT77 as none were on North American trucks. Safest bet is to bring in a rebuilt one.

The engine I have was never installed. It's nos defender 200tdi that was complete from the fan clutch to the pressure plate. I'm prepared to do a lot of fab work to fit it, but I need to find a tranny first. Otherwise I am goin to just adapt it to the stock series 3 box. But I've read that they won't hold up.

The series box will go boom.

What transfer case are you using and what gearing as this affects the choice? What are you doing with the axle gearing? This all needs to be thought of together.

Strength wise you want an F or later suffix LT77 or an R380. The defender version will be better for placing the shifters. I'm not sure if short or long bellhousing makes a difference. You would need to talk to people that have tried it. Clearance to the tunnel and seat box are the concerns.

Also, IMO, there is no point to a used box unless you are rebuilding it. These are not bulletproof and a 20 year old used piece is just a time bomb.

I will be swapping to toyota 4.10 axles and using a 1.2 lt230 transfercase. I'm going to construct a new tunnel cover once the drivetrain is in place.
I've got a discovery v8 r380, what would I need to use it?

Rebuild the box with diesel input shaft and then add a diesel bellhousing and all the throwout parts. You could go short or long.

The shifter will be in the seat box or you could rebuild with defender shifter parts as well to get them in the correct location.

The V8 first gear will be a bit high so you could also change to the diesel first gear.

That or buy a rebuilt ready to go diesel defender box.

I have a 70K mile very solid LT77 and a part-time transfer case that IMO would be perfect for a Series conversion.

PM me if interested.
