But let me get this straight. You can then, once it's in the US, swap out the chassis for a galvy or a new one with no consequence?

Call Eddie @ West Coast Rovers. I think he and Julien have a kick ass white one here for sale in Irvine. I have been in the vehicle and it is impressive.

Read the posts in "what's legal" regarding the line between a "restoration" and a "rebuild." In particular the for truck no action letter and the VW beetle no action letter.

Not exactly accurate, but in the ballpark. The new Low Emission Zone (LEZ) regs will make most diesels non-compliant. To run one inside the LEZ will require paying a rather expensive fee. Most petrol engines will comply, so some UK diesel Defender owners are considering a swap to a V8 running LPG to keep the fuel costs in line with the oil burner.

I'd expect the more likely action will be owners will sell the diesel Land Rover and buy a petrol vehicle, not do the engine swap. And the petrol vehicle will likely not be a Land Rover, since the only petrol option is thirsty V8 -- not a good choice in the land of $8.50 a gallon fuel. Mitsubishi, Nissan and Toyota will reap the benefit of offering fuel efficient petrol engines.

I use eddie @ WCR in Irvine. At a push i can also offer the rolls royce dealer in Beverly Hills if you want to pay the $400/hour labour charge.

Im sure there will be plenty of BH lawyers in the waiting room while you get your Puma fixed that you can ask for legal advice.

LOL

I can give myself legal advice. Going around and around with getting a rebuild new defender is one of those issues where I would be rich if I was collecting my rate.

Because it is 100k fine and maybe my job/law license if I do it wrong/they decide the loop hole was actually illegal.
