You've been around here since 2006...you know the drill, Steve. Budget, etc. Quick search gets you most of the info you want. Doug is a registered importer. rivermike sells trucks and can help with import, etc. Check the For Sale section for his recent listings.

You may be right. From his Services page:

Depending on where your desired purchase is
located we can often offer the following:

  • Pre purchase inspection
Handle funds transfer to seller via an exchange bank
    Document Collection from seller
    Vehicle pickup via transporter
Transport to the port of Export
    All Export and Security Filings
    Import Package preparation and filing
  • In most cases shipment to your location from port of entry

Correct. I looked into it. The only upside/reason to get registered, was the ability to be bonded to handle vehicles not utilizing the 25 yr rule. IE federalizing them to meet EPA and DOT requirements, ie what Tom Cruise was doing in Rainman. Thats a very small market segment and not something I wanted to get into. I trade enough emails with DOT now, not an agency I want to work more closely with.
