The codes are not set by the ECU really (well some are) but if you put a new ECU in a car that has issues the codes will all come right back. In most cases the issues are the car, not the ECU.
Also be aware that GEMS ECUs are locked to the car and will have to be coded to the car you put it in otherwise no starty.

"will have to be coded to the car you put it in otherwise no starty"

Not always true, suprisingly (at least on discos).

That could be true. I only know GEMS from 1997 Defenders and when we chip them or use a different unit they always have to be coded or unlocked.

i have a 97 d90 that has the o2 sensor is "on" in the ecu and can not be cleared. i had another (used) ecu here that the service shop plugged in and now they say the o2 is cleared but now its the rough road and somehting else popping up and they can not clear them.

does this make sense?

how do i unlock it?? can i unlock it??
