Defender transmission for 200tdi

I want everything from the bell housing to the trans brake and the levers and linkages. Obviously I'd prefer an R380 but they're like gold dust with the 200tdi defender bell housing. I'm hoping someone has an LT77/LT230 they don't need. I'll consider any condition.

Matt,
Renching in DC has a lt77/lt230 setup he just took out of a 2.25 truck. Tranny is correct for your truck. The tcase is a 1.6 but your rig spends its whole life in low range so might be a good setup for you.

It looks like I'm set.
Who would have guessed that the bits I need are only a few miles from my home. And that despite the fact that this setup was never sold in the us.

Thanks Doug for the tip.

Be careful not to use an LT77 earlier than a "G" suffix. They are not strong enough for the 200TDI. G or later only.....

Yes I really wanted a G or later LT77 and I think what I'm getting (I haven't picked it up yet) is an early suffix. Right now I'm using a late series III gearbox so even an early LT77 will probably be at least as strong (actually about the same according to one fairly reliable source) but by switching to an LT77/LT230 then at least I have an upgrade path i.e. if the gearbox fails then I can put in a newer one. Also there's the possibility of an underdrive at some time in the future.

I actually have a spare v8 r380 (in need of reconditioning.) I did a lot of research to see if this could be made to fit but it turns out that the short 200tdi bellhousing for an R380 is just about impossible to find and the longer bellhousings (e.g. disco 200tdi) will move the gear shift lever to behind the front seats. I only have about 2 inches room to move the engine forward and that's not nearly enough. Also... LT77 and R380 bellhousings aren't interchangeable and even if they were I'd need a custom length input shaft because the LT77 and R380 bellhousings are different lengths.

I think that's probably much more information than anyone really wants to know but by now I guess nobody is reading this thread anyway.

I assume you know Ashcroft is planning to start building new short shaft R380s? At least it gives you a good option WHEN the early suffix box dies.....

We are very pleased to advise that due to considerable demand we are now in the process of manufacturing our own "stumpy/short bellhousing" R380, a direct replacement for the LT77 Defender gearbox. This is now well under way and hope it will be available around the end of September. Keep looking at our website for further updates or if you would like to register your interest please email support@ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk and we will contact you once further information is available. Prices are as yet unconfirmed.
