Brian,
You haven't met Pedro. Those of us who have know how this will play out if he
puts a 2.5 natural in his truck, despite his protestations to the contrary.

I'm in the camp that none of these engines are the poster child for logic. And it certainly seems to me like there's just as many TDI trucks sitting on the sidelines crying for attention as NA's.

Agreed that they all suck.

The NA and the TD are very similar...

Some idiot at Solihull said.... Hold my tea and watch me put a Turbo to this underpowered to this POS... and screwed up a good motor.

Why not go with a 3.9 from a disco with a carb and have some power?

I would go for a tdi or a V8. Since you want lower cost for now, I think a V8, gas is cheap these days.

Do you have an estimate on the cost of swapping from his current TD environment to a V8?

I don't but a guy I sold a defender to last year did it by himself in a weekend, so shouldn't be too bad. Not a mechanic by any stretch but it can't be that bad.

------ Follow up post added August 4th, 2015 01:58 PM ------

Requote on the weekend claim, I know he did it by himself but I don't think he mentioned how long it took.

Honest question: if you were to take a ROW 90 that needed a motor, found a d1 that was a rusty runner, moved the engine mounts, and swapped a carb onto the motor, how far away from success would you be? I realize it doesn't have the expo-bling of a diesel, but you'd have the (sorely needed) power to drive on the highway, endless spares, even an automatic transmission if you so desired.

May be of interest. A kit for 400 pounds to convert defender to the 3.9 V8.

Jeebus... stop this fucking stupidity.

Where the hell you see in my original post... WTF you guys think I should do. NO WHERE. I'm still looking for the poll and votes.

I want a shitty 2.5NA and that's the end of it.

If you don't like it... though luck.

People do it every time and it's fine... I want to do it and it's stupid. I'm getting tired of this shit.

I have an 89 110 with a 19J and have driven a buddies 88 110 with a 12J . . . think we all agree they are both underpowered when on the hwy going up hill. One must ask what you are doing with LR, towing, offroad, daily driver, etc. I haven't driven a 90 so don't know if there is a big difference in weight in the 2.

I have been wrestling with this same issue for some time, what way to go in upgrading the engine . . . all comes down to how much $$ a fella wants to throw at it.

LOL- I agree with the Dro
Stick the 2.5NA in it and DRIVE!
Newman will be fair and hell, he will probably wait around and help you stick it in the truck before you can finish the first 24-pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon!
I predict this 2.5 swapover can be done in a weekend....if not less...maybe a day.
