1.2 gears for lt230

Hey everyone, in an effort to make my v8 110 more highway friendly, I'm looking for the 1.2 gear setup for the lt230. Let me know what you have. I believe the 95 disco might have the correct gears. Thanks

Pretty much all NAS discos will have 1.2. Do you have 1.4 now? I know someone that is looking for that and would probably have a D1 or D2 transfer case to trade.

I wanted to keep my current transfer box in case I don't like it, so I would be looking to just buy and not trade. If it works out well, then I would sell what I don't need...

Steven: Check your local salvage yards. LT230s go pretty cheap

This is the way to go, source a LT230Q and the just use your front/rear housings to move over the bits that tend to be different.

I did just that.

If the shipping is a pain on Mongos LT230 you can try car-parts.com for something closer.

I'll make some calls to the local yards today. We'll see what I can find.

I recall Lav's experience at the Yard. Dropping one out in a field vs. paying for shipping on a low mileage unit is something to think about.

Yeah, I thought about that. I may just wait around a bit and find a trashed disco locally from 94-95 and buy it, then pull the 3.9 / efi also. I've never fully rebuilt an engine before and it might be fun to take my time without having the car apart on the driveway... Winter project....

Makes sense. Especially buying a running truck that hopefully has all you'll need to do a complete conversion. Should save time and your last nerve. .

If you install a LT230 from an automatic onto a manual, you have to remove the neutral solenoid to use low range. Several threads here about how to do it. Also be careful that some D2 don't have the differential lock.

I was going to ask that. If I find a disco that is automatic, I can still use that in mine??? I would probably cannibalize the disco box and take just the 1.2 stuff that I need. If I do that, the solenoid or diff lock shouldn't come into play, right?? Ashcroft has a great step by step on their website that outlines the gear change. What year do I draw the line? I know 94-95 disco's have the lt230 with the 3.9, but I'm not sure what else would fit that is nas. Thanks everyone..

I think you are over complicating this…the biggest problem with swapping the gears is finding cases with the same input gears. You can't use a gear set from a 2001 tcase in one from 94 or 95.

Find a case with low miles, if it doesn't have the CDL nipple on the front housing, just swap yours onto it…
If it has shift solenoid, just pull it, it's useless

I believe any LT230 (all Disco I & II and others) will bolt into your Defender. Swapping parts into your box, more limited.

Read starting at message 23 for how to remove the solenoid.

Yes. There is a stub connecting the auto to lt230 (afaik), that will need removing.
I reused my D1 drivetrain in my build, only part needing replacement was the tbox to rear axle propshaft.

Listen to Frank. 230's are cheap as chips. You have to pull the case to pull the intermediate shaft and change the gear ratio so it really makes little sense to buy the gear set and pull one apart when you can buy another transfer case for short money.
